Stephen's 2024 Mercedes Sprinter 3500 DRW — Built to Go the Distance
Every adventure rig starts with a vision — and for Stephen Mathers, that meant transforming his 2024 Mercedes Sprinter 3500 DRW into a capable, confidence-inspiring machine ready for anything the open road throws its way. From suspension to stance, every component in this build was chosen to elevate performance, handling, and reliability where it matters most.
Suspension & Handling
The foundation of this Sprinter’s transformation lies in its suspension system — a King Suspension setup consisting of front coilovers, front auxiliary shocks, and massive rear 3.0 shocks, all sourced through Shadowmarq.
This upgrade completely redefines how the Sprinter handles uneven terrain, delivering unmatched damping control and comfort. Whether tackling washboard roads or steep alpine switchbacks, the Kings keep the van composed, controlled, and ready for the next stretch.
To balance out the improved damping, a PAD Overland Heavy-Duty Rear Sway Bar was added. This upgrade minimizes body roll in corners, keeps the van steady in crosswinds, and adds a level of highway stability that every long-haul traveler can appreciate.
In the rear, Deaver Heavy-Duty Leaf Springs (via Shadowmarq) provide the load support and articulation needed for fully built camper conversions or gear-heavy setups — ensuring the van stays level and predictable, no matter the weight.
Wheels & Tires
For a proper stance and rugged capability, the stock duals were swapped for a Reika Super Single wheel setup, paired with Toyo Open Country AT3 LT275/70R17 tires. This combination delivers the ideal balance between on-road comfort, off-road traction, and durability.
The wider footprint and aggressive tread pattern not only enhance control on dirt and gravel but also give the Sprinter a purposeful, trail-ready aesthetic.
Exterior Details & Functional Upgrades
A few key finishing touches take this build to the next level:
-
Flatline Van Co Hood Strut Kit makes maintenance and under-hood access effortless.
-
Terrawagen Mondo Mudguard Kit adds protection from rocks, road spray, and trail debris — keeping the body panels cleaner and safer during off-road travel.
These details might seem subtle, but they’re the kind of thoughtful upgrades that define a professional-grade adventure van.
